A Walk to Remember reveals the love story between two individuals in Morehead city in Beaufort, North Carolina. Morehead city remains isolated as a small place where everyone knows one another. The story starts from the point of view of a fifty-seven year old man looking back at his past, starting from his senior year in high school.
Landon Carter helps visualize the common social, young man who has no cares. He attends a high school in Beaufort as the son of a well known United States Congressman. Landon's father pushes him to become the student body president at his school. Landon becomes student body president and has to go to the required homecoming dance. Desperate for a last minute date, he chooses to go with someone no one would expect, Jamie Sullivan. Jamie, the daughter of the local Reverend and the goody-two-shoes of the school, portrays the exact opposite of Landon. She illustrates a quiet girl who always carries her Bible with her all day at school. She looks after her widowed father, rescues hurt animals, and helps out at the local orphanage. No boy has ever asked her out. Landon and Jamie seem to be exact opposites and no one would ever think they would fall in love. Landon and Jamie both receive main roles in the school's Christmas play, starting a gradual and reluctant relationship. As the two spend time rehearsing and talking, Landon starts to like Jamie and they soon fall in love without regards to their parents or friends. An untold secret reveals itself and puts strain on their relationship. Their innocent love becomes complicated, but will they pull through? Will Jamie help Landon change from an immature high school senior to a selfless and loving man?
A Walk to Remember, filled with love and tragedy, will always remain one of my favorite novels. Once you read just a few pages, you cannot put the book down. I found A Walk to Remember worth reading and enjoyed the predictable yet complicated plot. The story portrays a simple love story in a small city. Even though the story never truly excites with adventure or suspense, the tragedy the two characters face remains believable and more than enough to keep the story interesting. The story will touch you and help you appreciate things you take for granted. Nicholas Sparks knows how to tug at a reader's heartstrings. The book teaches that love and support can get one through any hardship. Not only will you fall in love with the book, you will fall in love with the genuine characters and peaceful setting. I decided to give the book a chance since I enjoyed other works by Nicholas Sparks and the movie that came out a few years ago. The book fulfilled my expectations as much as the movie did, if not more. I would recommend A Walk to Remember to anyone that enjoys a classic love story. Take this “walk” with Spark, you will love it.
